TT conducts gear technology and data analysis training

REBYC-III CLME+

As part of the “Strategies, technologies, and social solutions to manage bycatch in tropical Large Marine Ecosystem Fisheries (REBYC-III CLME+)” project, the Ministry or Agriculture and Fisheries in Trinidad and Tobago is hosting a workshop and training course on gear technology and data analysis.

The workshop and training course will run from 27 – 31 October 2025 and is being conducted by Dr. Antonello Sala, Lead Technical Advisor (LTA) for Component 1 of the REBYC-III CLME+ project. It is being conducted at the Ministry’s Head Office in Chaguanas, Trinidad.

The main aim of the workshop is to strengthen technical capacity in gear technology and data analysis, specifically focusing on practical applications regarding fisheries bycatch mitigation. The objectives of the workshop include:

  • developing a centralised database for fisheries data collection;
  • extracting and analysing data; and
  • reporting and capturing results achieved.

A field visit is also planned as part of the training, to northeast Trinidad (Cumana/Toco) to meet and discuss the data analysis as well as present the collected data and primary figures of the gillnet LED illumination gear trials. It is expected that these results will be shared with fishers and other key stakeholders, who were involved in conducting the trials and selectivity experiments under Component 1 of the REBYC – III CLME+ project.
