Enhancing fisheries co-management in Guyana

Following on from Trinidad and Tobago, the Guyana Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture is conducting a two-day train-the-trainers workshop to enhance fisheries co-management in that country. The workshop, being held from 10-11 November 2025 and is part of the “Enhancing capacity for the adoption and implementation of EAF in the shrimp and ground fish fisheries of the North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (EAF4SG)”, project.

Conducted by Dr. Robert Pomeroy, international co-management consultant, the workshop aims to enhance the capacity of Guyana Fisheries Department officers to support co-management to reactivate the Fisheries Advisory Committee (FAC) and its benefits for fisheries management in Guyana.

This training will provide:

  • An overview of fisheries co-management.
  • Application of co-management for fisheries management in Guyana.
  • Discussion of the role and function of the FAC in co-management and engagement with stakeholders.
  • Development of an action plan for reactivation of the FAC including partnership with Seabob Working Group, Guyana National Fisherfolk Organisation and Fishermen Cooperatives.

This activity falls under Component 2 of the EAF project, which focuses on strengthening national and sub-regional fisheries governance with emphasis on improving the participation of small-scale fisheries (SSF) stakeholders and minority groups, particularly on building capacity for co-management. A focus is placed on improving representation on, and operationalisation of the National Inter-sectoral Coordination Mechanisms (NICs) for fisheries management in each of the three participating countries which includes Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. A cross-section of participants are attending the workshop.
